Any type of change can cause a feeling of instability, uncertainty and loss of control.
It can be easy to focus more on the negative side of things, the thing is change also helps us embrace and live life to its fullest, experience as much as possible without letting our fear limit us.
Most of the time we cannot avoid change, it’s out of our control. If it’s a choice there could be many benefits and experiences missed.
Here are 5 steps to help navigate through changing circumstances:
1. Stare discomfort in the face
Take a deep breath and look at the pros and cons of the change – what is your discomfort?
2. Find ways to focus on the pros of change
If you don’t have a choice about the change, dwelling on the negative aspects will only make it harder for all involved.
If you have a choice, only you can make that decision – remember short term discomfort can lead to some amazing things, if you let it.
Take it one step at a time
Concentrate on taking that all important first step, it doesn’t need to be a big step!
Break the goal or job down into key steps, it helps get rid of overwhelm.
Take each stage and break them down even further if needed. Write them down.
Accept and acknowledge
When you feel yourself resisting, look at what is behind that feeling.
Separate reality from perceived fears.
Acknowledge that if you are a planner, we can’t plan for everything, things will go wrong and that’s ok.
Create new routines and habits
Look at what you need to introduce or modify to support you through the change.
Personally I’m not comfortable with change, but by working through my fears it has helped me take the plunge to go travelling solo, start a new life on the other side of the world, create 2 businesses and more significantly live clutter free.
It was worth every bit of discomfort and uncertainty!
